Dear
God, in a world where much is
available yet so many still go
wanting we thank you for all you
have given us.
In
a time when family life is often
fragmented and chaotic we thank
you for the family we have with
us today.
In
a time when so many cannot
express their faith we thank you
for our freedoms.
In
a world that moves ever more
quickly, we thank you for this
today to share a meal with loved
ones, and to rest, reflect and
refresh ourselves on this
Thanksgiving Day.
Amen

Life
at the Poverty Line. Every day
is about hanging on.
Of the 37 million people
considered to be living below
the poverty line, 45% work full
time but still do not make
enough money to feed their
families, keep roofs over their
heads, & pay for health
care. The Catholic Campaign for
Human Development (CCHD)
supports community-based
projects-founded & managed
by the poor themselves-that work
toward building a better &
more just community where
poverty does not exist. You can
make a difference. Please donate
prayerfully & generously in
today’s CCHD Collection.
We
read in the gospel of John
(6:15): “Jesus realized that
they would come & carry him
off to make him king, so he fled
back to the mountain alone.”
Why, then, do we now proclaim
him to be Christ the King?
John
himself give the answer, first
in his gospel & again in the
Book of Revelations: it all
depends on what is meant by the
term “king.”
In
his gospel, John gives detailed
attention to the interrogation
of Christ by Pilate, to the fact
that Pilate had a sign (Jesus of
Nazareth, King of the Jews)
placed on the cross, & to
the crowd’s protestation:
“We have no king but
Caesar!” In all of this,
Pilate & the Jews have one
understanding of the term
“king,” & Jesus has
another. He plainly says, “My
kingdom is not of this world.
In
his own words, Jesus came “to
testify to the truth.” He
adds, “Anyone committed to the
truth hears my voice.” ln
response, Pilate, the cynical
politician & manipulator who
has often compromised who has
often compromised himself, can
only wonder: “Truth, What does
that mean?”
Historically,
the feast day of Christ the King
was established as the
“crowning” of devotion to
the Sacred Heart. Jesus is King,
not in a dominative sense, but
in an absolute sense, because
all people, events & things
have meaning only in him. He is
the Way, Truth & Life. May
he be your King now &
forever!

In a California
church he spotted a golden
telephone on the vestibule wall,
the sign said ’Calls $10,000 a
minute.’ Seeking out the
pastor, he asked about the phone
& the sign. The pastor
answered that this golden phone
was, in fact, a direct line to
heaven, &
if he paid the price, he
could talk directly to God. The
man thanked the pastor &
proceeded on his way.
As
he continued to visit churches
in Seattle, Dallas, St. Louis,
Chicago, Minneapolis & found
more phones, with the same sign,
& the same answer from each
pastor.
Then he arrived
in Northern New York. Upon
entering a church in Watertown,
NY, he saw yet another golden
telephone. However; This time,
the sign read: ‘Calls: 35
cents.’
Fascinated with
this; he asked to talk to the
pastor, ‘Reverend,’ he said,
‘I have been in cities all
across the country, & in
many churches I have found a
similar golden telephone. At the
other churches I was told it is
a direct line to Heaven, &
that I could talk to God. But,
in the other churches, the cost
was $10,000 a minute, your sign
reads only 35 cents a call. Why?
The pastor,
smiling benignly, replied,
‘Son, you’re Northern New
York…..You’re IN God’s
Country…. It’s a
local call.’

Liturgy
of the Word with Children will
begin at the 10:30 am Mass the
first Sun. of Dec. We thank
Cindy Oddi, Judy Sheridan, Alice
Busler & Eric Sharlow who
have already volunteered their
services. It is our hope that
the Liturgy of the Word can be
offered for the children at both
the 10:30 am & the 4:30 pm
Masses every weekend. Therefore,
we would like to have at least
four more volunteers so that no
one person would minister more
than once a month.
Training
for this ministry will be held
on Weds., Dec. 3 at 7:00 pm in
the school cafeteria. If you are
interested in becoming part of
this important ministry please
call Sister Diane Marie, SSJ at
the parish office 782-1474.
