Please welcome our new Pastor Father Frank Natale MSC
We will be having a Farewell celebration for Father Jonas on Sunday, July 19th after the 10:30am Mass. This is a wonderful opportunity to welcome Father Natale as he will be taking over as our Pastor on July 20th. The Celebration will take place in the school Gymnasium, please enter through the school doors that are located in the parking lot and exit through the Gym doors. We ask that everyone wear a mask and adhere to social distancing guidelines at all times. No lingering please.
Gov. Cuomo has opened the churches up to celebrate mass for approximately 100 to 150 people today, June 6, 2020. Special rules are to be applied - masks, 6 ft. social distancing etc. Because of short notice, Father Jonas is having only one mass tomorrow at 8:30am. - no music, no singing - bring your own prayer books. Call your friends. Next week will be the normal times - Saturday 4:30, Sunday 8:00am and 10:30 am.
According to the Bishop and Gov. Cuomo, the opening of the church will be in phase 4 on June 26, 2020. There are numerous rules and cleaning to be done to get ready for Mass on the following Sunday. We will keep you posted as we get closer to that date. Remember, the church is open daily right now for prayer only. Go to rcdony.org to watch Bishop LaValley's video on the opening.

So grateful for support:
Bishop LaValley, our pastors and the Development Office are so grateful of the continued support during this COVID-19 pandemic isolation. Parish Offertory envelopes are being mailed, dropped off and gifts on-line (where offered), It’s Our Church, It’s Our Future Capital Campaign and Bishop’s Fund Appeal gifts and pledge payments continue to come in via mail and on-line (see below) as well. As we have not been able to gather together to share our faith, the continued support to stay spiritually engaged and the continued generous financial support from parishioners throughout the Diocese of Ogdensburg has been both noticed and appreciated.
“We may be separated due to the health crisis, but we are united in the Body of Christ,” said Bishop LaValley. “Thank you for continuing to pray with us through social media opportunities provided. I want to thank you for continuing to support your parish though Sunday envelopes or special donations as your parish relies on your generous support.” Bishop added “I am so grateful for parish priests who, utilizing creative means, are providing parishioners with spiritual support and pastoral presence that is crucial, especially during times like these. I urge you to contact your parish priest should you or your neighbor have particular needs that they can address. Your loved ones remain in my prayers.”
Please join us here at the Diocese in praying for the end of this pandemic, for the healing of those who are afflicted with this dreadful virus, our health care workers, public safety workers and all those providing essential services.

Catholic Charities Mother's Day Appeal
The success of the Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Appeal relies on the generosity of our parishioners. The Appeal is a critical component of Catholic Charities’ operating budget.
With the extended pandemic restrictions in New York State, prudence dictates the in-pew Mother’s Day Appeal unwise. Therefore, the 2020 Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Appeal will be moved to Father’s Day, June 21, 2020 in the hopes we will be able to gather for Mass by that time. This information will be distributed via the North Country Catholic and the diocesan website.
Please know that parishioners can still make online pledges on www.cathcharities.org. It is unclear whether a mass mailing, the third prong of the normal Appeal, will occur since the businesses used to assemble the mailing are closed.
Stay safe and well! Grace and peace,
Deacon James Crowley, Chancellor
Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg
PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU HAVE ALREADY SENT YOUR ENVELOPE IN, WE WILL HOLD THE MONEY IN A SEPARATE ACCOUNT, AND SEND IT WITH THE JUNE COLLECTION.

LITURGICAL UPDATES: PRAYER, FORGIVENESS, AND INDULGENCES Diocese of Ogdensburg March 23, 2020
In Bishop LaValley’s letter to Priests dated March 17, he stated that, at this time “the individual reception of the Sacrament of Penance may continue to be offered. We are not in a situation that requires general absolution. Again, social distancing for all present as well as maintaining the necessary health precautions is important.” Some pastors have chosen to only hear confessions in open spaces such as their chapel or from a church window to maintain good health precautions. Wednesday, March 25 is the Feast of the Annunciation. Pope Francis asks Christians of every denomination to pray the Lord’s Prayer at noon on that day.
The Holy Father said, “To the pandemic of the virus we want to respond with the universality of prayer, compassion and tenderness. Let’s stay united. Let us make those who are alone and tested feel our closeness…as well as doctors, nurses, other healthcare workers and volunteers.” Again, let us all join the Holy Father at noon on Wednesday in reciting the Lord’s Prayer. As we continue to provide pastoral care to our parishioners, Bishop LaValley offered us the following resource from the USCCB: The Care of Souls and the Forgiveness of Sins During This Pandemic. Given the current difficulty one encounters in celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Holy See has offered recourses to the faithful:
1. “Where the individual faithful find themselves in the painful impossibility of receiving sacramental absolution, it should be remembered that perfect contrition, coming from the love of God, expressed by a sincere request for forgiveness and accompanied by the firm resolution to have recourse, as soon as possible, to sacramental confession, obtains forgiveness of sins, even mortal ones (cf. CCC, 1452).” Perfect contrition requires
1. Love of God
2. The sincere desire for forgiveness
3. The ardent commitment to receive the sacrament of reconciliation when available.
2. “The gift of special Indulgences is granted to the faithful suffering from COVID-19 disease (coronavirus), as well as to health care workers, family members and all those who in any capacity, including through prayer, care for them” • This is a time of suffering, especially for those who have contracted COVID-19. As such, it may be a time for us to “rediscover ‘the same redemptive suffering of Christ’ (Salvifici doloris, 30).” Trusting in Christ, •
A Plenary indulgence is “granted to the faithful suffering from Coronavirus, who are subject to quarantine by order of the health authority in hospitals or in their own homes if, with a spirit detached from any sin, they unite spiritually through the media to the celebration of Holy Mass, the recitation of the Holy Rosary, to the pious practice of the Way of the Cross or other forms of devotion, or if at least they will recite the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer and a pious invocation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, offering this trial in a spirit of faith in God and charity towards their sisters and brothers, with the will to fulfil the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer according to the Holy Father’s intentions), as soon as possible.” •
“Health care workers, family members and all those who, following the example of the Good Samaritan, exposing themselves to the risk of contagion, care for the sick of Coronavirus according to the words of the divine Redeemer: ‘Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends’ (Jn 15:13), will obtain the same gift of the Plenary Indulgence under the same conditions.”
3. An indulgence is “the expression of the Church’s full confidence of being heard by the Father when – in view of Christ’s merits and, by His gift, those of our Lady and the saints – she asks Him to mitigate or cancel the painful aspect of punishment by fostering its medicinal aspect through other channels of grace” (John Paul II, General Audience, Sept. 29, 1999).
Promotion and catechesis on these remedies during the absence of the sacrament of Reconciliation can be a source of great consolation for all the faithful. A brief catechesis on how the faithful can participate in both the indulgence and the act of perfect contrition will be shortly available on the USCCB website usccb.org.

The Diocese of Ogdensburg has not called for the suspension of any practices at Mass in response to the new coronavirus that appeared in China and has been detected in several countries, including the United States, but is closely monitoring the situation.
The same precautions and recommendations that are applied each year for defense against influenza should be employed.
To stay home? The Catechism of the Catholic Church #2181 reminds us that “illness” is one of the serious reasons for which participation in Sunday Eucharist can be excused. Note, it does not say “serious illness.” If you are sick, you can (and probably should) stay home.
To go to Mass? If you are concerned that you might be getting ill, or if you are concerned about contracting an illness, the following precautions can assist:
Below is a joint statement from the USCCB, Catholic Relief Services, and the Catholic Health Association of the United States:
“As communities and public health officials respond to the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in China and closely monitor its presence and progression in other parts of the world, we join in solidarity and prayer for those impacted or working to treat those infected by the disease. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Catholic Relief Services, and the Catholic Health Association of the United States hope that
governments will work together in partnership to improve all nations’ capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to this virus.
“The Catholic Church in the United States stands in solidarity with those affected by the coronavirus and their families, health workers who are valiantly trying to diagnose and treat patients, and those under quarantine awaiting results of their screening for the virus. We offer our prayers for healing and support those organizations, both domestic and international, working to provide medical supplies and assistance to address this serious risk to public health.
“In early February, the Holy See sent 700,000 respiratory masks to China to help prevent the spread of the disease. Within the United States, Catholic healthcare providers are at the front line of providing treatment and care to those impacted by the virus.
“We also commend the U.S. government for transporting more than 17 tons of donated medical supplies to China. This response to the novel coronavirus demonstrates the critical importance of the need to work together and to invest in crucial health care systems here and in other countries, thus preventing and responding to community-wide emergencies. We urge the U.S. Congress to support these efforts by protecting access to domestic health care safety net programs and by providing additional emergency international assistance to areas impacted by the virus. “We also urge individuals to stay informed as information becomes available by going to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html .”

- Refrain from extending hands at the sign of peace. (Instead, perhaps simply smile, wave, and say, “Peace.”)
- Refrain from receiving from the chalice.
- Holding hands during the Lord’s Prayer (while never prescribed) should be discouraged.
- Hand sanitizer should be made available in churches.
- Priests, Deacons, and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are encouraged to practice good hygiene, washing their hands before Mass begins or even using an alcohol based anti-bacterial solution before and after distributing Holy Communion. (If ill, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should always find a substitute.)
- Holy water fonts are cleaned, and the water changed on a regular basis.

LENTEN REGULATIONS 2020February 26, 2020 is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the Season of Lent.
ABSTINENCE
All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are bound to abstain totally from meat on the following days: Ash Wednesday, Fridays of Lent, & Good Friday.
FASTING
All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are bound also to observe the Law of Fast on the following days: Ash Wednesday (February 26) and Good Friday (April 10). Fasting, that is, eating less, involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Lighter nourishment may be taken on two other occasions in the course of the day.
PRAYER & PENANCE
The entire season of Lent should be observed in a spirit of prayer and penance. Spending extra time in prayer or Bible study, attending daily Mass, voluntary sacrifice and self-denial, combined with works of charity and service to others, are all excellent ways to obey the Lord's command to reform our lives and to prepare for the joyful celebration of Easter. Parishes are highly encouraged to offer periods of Eucharistic Adoration during the Lenten Season, as well as, the traditional devotions of the Stations of the Cross and the recitation of the Rosary.
SACRAMENT OF PENANCE
Bishop LaValley encourages parishes throughout the Diocese to offer an extended period for the Sacrament of Penance. Some recent observances have been “The Light is on for You” or “24 Hours with the Lord”. In addition to this occasion, other occasions for the Sacrament of Penance should be made available during the Lenten Season and the Sacred Triduum.
EASTER DUTY
All Catholics who have reached the age of reason must confess their serious sins in the Sacrament of Penance at least once a year. They must also receive Holy Communion at
least once each year between the First Sunday of Lent (March 1) and Trinity Sunday (June 7).
MARRIAGE
Although other seasons are more suitable, the celebration of marriage and the Nuptial Mass are not forbidden during Lent, according to The Code of Canon Law. When liturgical rules permit, the Ritual Mass for the Celebration of Marriage may be used, and the nuptial blessing may be given. However, you should advise the spouses and their guests to exercise proper restraint in accord with the penitential character of Lent.
OBLIGATION
All Christ’s faithful are obliged by divine law to do penance. The days set aside for fast and abstinence in Lent are special ways of doing penance and are an expression of unity for all the Church.
CHRISM MASS
A reminder that this year’s Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 2nd at 11:00 am at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Ogdensburg. Details pertaining to this event will be forthcoming.
FUNERALS DURING THE SACRED TRIDUUM
On Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, Funeral Masses may not be celebrated. However, a Funeral Service consisting of the Liturgy of the Word and the Final Commendation may be held in Church.
